The location of the Underpass in Central Nyack, NY.
CENTRAL NYACK, NY (Rockland County)-Around 2:45 p.m. on Dr. Martin Luther King Day, in Nyack, an Underpass was reported to crumble. The overpass, which runs over NY Route , hasn’t been updated since the commencement of construction on the Eisenhower Interstate System in the early 1960’s. The underpass is in dire need of repair, because of it’s close location to the Tappan Zee Bridge, a collapse would spell disaster for Nyack and Central Nyack. The only link between Nyack and Central Nyack is NY Route , via this underpass. If collapsed, it would be near impossible to find a way to cross the Tappan Zee Bridge, meanwhile South Nyack would be flooded with Interstate Traffic on Side Streets, where the only way around the mess would be through Piermont or Congers. Thankfully, NY Route Westbound was only closed for an hour. This just continues to show the need for new infrastructure, because a larger crumble of this underpass could spell disaster for communities all around the Nyack area. The road reopened shortly after 4 p.m. after a little more than two hours of closure.
